Truworths recently collaborated with, FEDISA, South Africa’s leading institute for a BA Degree in Fashion, on an exciting second year student project. The brief was simply to create innovative, creative, young, fresh and attractive notebook designs and of the ones submitted, 10 were selected as overall “winners”. The process of selection was undeniably tough as everyone at Truworths head office had a “favourite”, but unfortunately not every student could walk away with a “prize”. The notebooks are a fan favourite with internal staff and are a nice treat for new staff that joins the company.

I was inspired by the beauty of nature and what it has to offer. The owl on the backside of the design is a representation of freedom, a point of entry if you will, where one can spread their wings and fly (as cliche as that sounds). I felt a different approach toward this design as it should be appealing for both men and women.
I’m currently in my 2nd year at FEDISA™ studying a BA Degree in fashion. I love what I’m doing and learning, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I would like to see myself established in Tokyo or London in the next 5 years, designing and creating, owning my own label of men’s formal wear and women’s lingerie, amongst other things.
I enjoyed the process of creating this design, any computer based design program is a perfect medium to use for designs such as this.
To be honest I was working late that Thursday night on another urgent FEDISA project. This notebook designs was a quick last minute project of images I’ve always wanted to use, but never had the opportunity to do so.
The notebook competition allowed me to express my creativity and I thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating a memorable notebook cover besides my other urgent FEDISA projects. The competition also inspired me to improve my design abilities, which is important in the fashion industry.
My inspiration towards the designs was a mixture of images that I feel portray the fashion world at it’s best. My designs focused on the power of fashion and the ability to express emotions and reality through fashion.
I’m a second year fashion design student at FEDISA and really enjoy the course I’m doing. FEDISA give us a lot of amazing opportunities to design and create items for outside companies, films, fashion shows and brands that will open up doors for us as students in the future.
My end goal is to become an excellent fashion designer and stylist after my studies and to apply my knowledge to well- known South African fashion companies, like Truworths.
The inspiration behind the notebook design I created was simplicity in colour combined with a visual design that made the eye look further into the design. I am fond of designs that have a little something more to it.
I am currently studying a BA in Fashion Design at FEDISA. Since I can remember, I was always passionate about art and now I get the chance to study a form of art which I can express myself through and create clothing designs that excite one to wear.
The reason for why I chose to be in the fashion industry is for environmental reasons. Therefor my goal is to start a clothing line that is only made up of natural fiber materials and recycled plastics. Through this clothing line I wish to enhance the Eco-friendly trend in the fashion industry. The earth is our only home and we should be resourceful.
What I enjoyed most about the Truworths Notebook competition is that it challenged me in the sense that I had to follow certain requirements of a client and had to create a design that differed from my style. I successfully created a design that suited the client as well as myself. This was a great accomplishment for me. The Truworths Notebook competition was a great opportunity which I am grateful for.
